Rooibos Tea Health Benefits
The Rooibos tea has its lineage buried in Western Cape Province of South Africa where it had been consumed since ages but its uses and health benefits were introduced to the world in the 18th century. Rooibos is a herbal product and belongs to needle-like legume family of plants. Cultivated over limited land, Rooibos tea maybe black or red and is called by different names.
In South Africa it is customary to take this tea sans milk or sometimes even sugar. Unlike other black teas, Rooibos tea does not turn bitter if soaked for a long time. This tea is not cheap because of its limited cultivation and production; the red variety being more expensive. There is an increase in number of its consumers especially among the health fanatics of the West owing to the absence of artificial chemicals, pesticides or flavoring.
Health benefits: Rooibos tea is devoid of harmful ingredients, particularly caffeine and tannin and has a high percentage of antioxidants. The tea is said to rid nervous tensions, irritability, headaches and insomnia, combat allergies and digestive problems. Its medicinal uses include a check on infantile colic, stomach cramping, asthma, skin problems and allergies. The antioxidants present slow down the progression of aging and enhance body's immune system and absorption of iron. Rooibos tea carries positive effects on kidney stones and weight loss. In the treatment of skin irritation, the tea is brewed and placed on the affected part of the body. Rooibos tea is a safe beverage for kids, pregnant or nursing mothers. The tea has anti-viral and helps fend off nausea, heartburn and constipation.
Rooibos tea is believed to give us strong bones and teeth due to its richness of calcium, magnesium and fluoride. It's known to sooth down tired eyes when placed over them after being refrigerated. Added to this, it is perfect for recovering from a hangover. After a strenuous work-out, a person feels invigorated on drinking it.
Others: Rooibos tea is terrific for quenching one's thirst or use as a sport drink. Good for health, this tea more palatable than ordinary tea because it is less bitter, making it more popular even among children. It is not uncommon to sip the tea without any sweetener as it enjoys a naturally sweet taste. Can be taken hot or cold, this tea is the ideal way to start or end your day.
