Home Roasting business--I'm ready to jump in with both feet!

    Hello

This is my first time post.

I have been looking at starting my own coffee shop, doing in-house Roasting.
The site I have chosen will not be ready for ~another 2 years.

I was thinking of setting up a roaster at home (I live in the country) and doing a business out of my house & on line. I’d start with a small roaster (3kg batches).

I’d love to get some feed back on this idea... positives or negatives!

I am presently out of work & its kind of seems now or never.

    Thanks

    They've bean great to me!

Good for you, go for it. Just don't burn the house down!
Have you ever walked through the aisle of your local grocer and smelled the death of a dying bean?

    Thanks for the encouragement!!

I’d love to get a bit of a debate going though & hear some pros & cons.

If all works out I should be able to get this going in the next few months.

Input is always nice! How to market… who to market too… how to package… how to advertise…
I have my ideas I’d love to hear of some of yours… out there!!

Are you planning on setting up the roaster in your garage?
    Do you have proper ventilation?
How large do you plan on your bags being, for wholesale purposes?
Do you have a sealer to seal off your plastic bags?
have you thought about the color of bag?
If you plan on doing most business on the internet, it is important to keep in mind how your bags will be shipped and how they can uphold to being shipped.
would you have a store front? Or is it solely internet?

In my personal opinion, internet sales of coffee beans will only work if you involve your product in many different markets. You need to sell at farmer''s markets and have some shops that will carry your beans. Otherwise, without the ability to taste/smell/feel/see the coffee, it would be extremely difficult to create a consumer following.

its a hard biz to crack. You can try local coffee shops but alot of the time they get their machines from the comany that supplies their coffee. Small diners do not want to pay the extra for quality. Good luck...and make sure you get the proper permits.

-My roaster would be setup in the house & properly installed & vented
    -I’d initially look at selling ¼ ½ 1lb bags
-properly sealed bags, one color bags, labels done in house
I plan to setup an internet site, but would rely on local sales to start.
Custom labelling would be my initial marketing focus, going after that special small upscale restaurants, boutique store, gift shop, tourist shop, clubs & organizations doing fund raising etc.
My business plan is to do about 1500lbs in sales a month to start.

I agree with your comments; CafeWench & topher And thank you very much.

My business plan now is to get into the biz, with relatively low capital out put, develop my reputation and profile over the next 1-2 years. Then the location I have in mind for my shop (library, theatre complex) would be built and available to move into.

Thanks for the input please keep it coming!!
