    Home roasting

I took a different approach. I home roast for myself and friends but I buy green beans in bulk and resell to other home roasters. I am still waiting for my ship to come in but having a lot of fun and haven't got discouraged yet. Good luck to you and every one who starts a home business, it's the American way.

Jim - do you mean you roast and sell to your friends and family or are you not selling? What roaster do you have? Are you set up in a garage or other? When you say your ship hasn't come in yet, does that mean you are seeking buyers for your beans or are you hlding off for some reason? Sorry for lobbing all the questions...

    roast at home

I roast at home for myself and give some away to mostly family. I don't sell the roasted beans. I have 2 fresh roast plus 8 roasters plus a BBQ drum, I mostly roast outside. I have a website where I sell green coffee beans and not many customers. I do have a few at work and some friends buy off of my site also. I have been in business for 2 years and basically haven't turned a profit yet, that is what I mean about my ship has not come in. I have met many coffee farmers, distributors online and I am having a ball but at this point it is still a hobby.

    Green beans

At this point I am only selling green beans and roasted beans from a drop shipper. In the future my dream is to travel to different countries buying green beans and maybe some day roasting to sell but I have a lot to learn before then and I currently have a day job that takes most of my time.

Hey, I know where you might be able to find a really nice, used YM2 not very far from your house! Yes, I am talking about mine! In the next two to four weeks I will be making the decision as to whether or not I am going to upgrade to a larger machine.

Nothing wrong with starting small...that is what I did. I only mentioned the size issue because, even though I never planned to outgrow the YM2 this quick, it happened and now I wish I had bought a larger machine from the beginning. Just as an example, I just received a 165 lb order. It will take me about 16+ hours to roast that. My hourly wage will be in the negatives! On a 15 kilo I could do that in 3 hours!

As far as code is concerned, here in Indiana you can roast in part of your home as long as there is a room that divides the living space from the roasting facility. I actually use an exposed basement. It used to be an apartment and already had stainless steel sinks, a bathroom and all other necessary components. The great thing about it is that my shop is right there so I can work whenever I want or need. I also had no problem passing the organic inspection in this same location and they were more strict than the board of health!
