Only purchase whole beans that smell and taste fresh, not stale.

You do not want to buy pre-ground coffee:-D because you never know whether it is already rancid by the time you get it.

True! Although if properly vacuum sealed and packaged, the ground stuff can last a long time as well.

Unfortunately, most manufacturers don't package it properly. :decaf:

Before I got into exploring fresh local coffees I used to buy Café Bustelo in the vacuum sealed brick pack, as I call it. It was pretty good but it still didn't have the freshness that actual fresh coffee has. There was a definite difference. I've tried to contact 8 o'clock coffees sold in grocery stores to see if there is a consensus on how a consumer can determine how old coffee is by the "best by" date on the package. Unfortunately I haven't gotten an answer yet. I'll keep you guys posted.

I love when I see vacuum sealed coffee go on sale, but almost cry when I see the entire display is pre-ground and not whole bean. Grocery Outlet is the biggest culprit. Anyone else?
