Cup of Excellence 2017 Guatemala Results

This year CoE 2017 Guatemala has been very good for our company, Ensoluna S.A.
Those farms that our company represents won FIVE places in top 10 at the competition.

    #1 El Paraxaj
    #1 El Paraxaj
    #4 El Morito
    #7 Las Rosas
    #8 Finca Santa Felisa

PS: I know that there isn't anyone here in this forum to come down to Guatemala to visit these farms for possible Green bean purchase next year, but if anyone just would like to visit them, maybe I can arrange something when I take my customers to those farms in next harvest season (but maybe not Las Rosas, this farm is about 13 hours from Guatemala city. very far.)

thanks Doug. I did not do anything :+) ha ha ha.

all the farms that I work with, they are really top top class farms and they really do work very hard to make their coffee best in the world. my congratulation to those farms!

I represents El Paraxaj and Finca Santa Felisa (who won #1 & # in Acatenango (Chimaltenango state) for past 3 years and I knew that they would take #1 this year (last year, they got #2). El Injerto has been winning #1 for past 15 years and now they have very stiff competition. ha ha ha.
if you are coming to Guatemala, I am definitely taking you to this farm.

the best thing is that this farm is not that far. Just about 2 1/2 hours from Guatemala city.

    take care, Doug.

Wow! A lot of great farms. Although Guatemala has often been seen as the "gem" of Central America when it comes to coffee, it seems there is an overall increase in the "excellence" these farms are producing and the numbers and as you say "stiff competition" bear that out.

    A win for everyone!

One of farms we also work with is El Morito (that received #4 place in CoE Guatemala 2017).
it is a huge farm. The biggest farm that we are working with.
Photo 1 : these types of big farms have weight scale at their front gate.
#2 : Joka coffee (Jeff Bobcock) in seattle (3rd from left), Andres Latorre (right to Zoka) from Latorre coffee in Australia. Roberto (owner. next to me).
    #3 : it is HUGEEEEEEE!
#4 : they have been winning CoE in top 5 for last many many years.
#5 : they must have about 15 coffee bean dryers in their warehouse. (think of it as your laundry dryer, just 100000 times bigger! :+)

yes, you are right, John. as example, farms like Paraxaj, Santa Felisa and las rosas, only started participating since last year. I always knew these farms were top farms, as far as specialty coffee is concerned, but since they always had & have more demands than supply, they never thought about competing. But now, as CoE events are getting bigger and bigger around the world, it became more attractive for the farms that produce some of the great coffees in Guatemala.

To take this opportunity, I would like to explain bit more about CoE and why MANY SMALL FARMS avoid participating in CoE event.

There ARE a lot of small farms, specially in Huehuetenango, that produce top quality beans year after year and many of them know that they will be in top 25 in CoE if they present their coffee to the event. Then, why 99% of them does not do it?

the reason is the COST and Profit. Unless you ranks in top 5, you will not make profit from CoE event.

    let me explain.
in order to compete, you have to send your coffee, 5 to 25 bags mostly, top grade, to Guatemala City, CoE warehouse.
then, they will be vacuum packed & stored until they are auctioned and sold or lose the competition and farms take them back.

When they send the coffee from Huehuetenango to Guatemala city, it costs a lot for transportation and insurance.
also, when they do vacuum pack, they will charge $0.28 per pound.
Please the farm is responsible for storage charges from the time they sent the coffee, march to April, till they get sold which is mid June to Mid July.
if they fail to be ranked in CoE competition, they will have to pay again the transportation + insurance to get them back to their farm or try to sell them off at below their cost.

So, honestly, the farms do not make good profit unless they are ranked in top 5.

These farms do not compete in CoE to make money. they compete to get their farm names out in the world, hoping that more specialty customers will come and visit their farms. But in case of a lot of small Huehuetenango farms, since the farms are so far from Guatemala city that very few customers are willing to visit anyway. Hence, they do not feel the need for CoE.
