I doubt many of the new generation actually know why we celebrate the 4th. Some think that Jesse Ventura was one of the founding fathers:

Sad state of affairs we are in.

Even NH has gotten rid of its mottow "Live Free Or Die". There should be 2 films that should be mandatory watching: John Adams and 1984. Good stuff.

    Happy 4th.

    Hi Len,

That video was entertaining, but mainly depressing.

Yes, it's a sad state of affairs we're in.

I guess I should have explained better. I thought you were just wondering why people tell each other to have a safe 4th of July. It seems that this holiday has lost some of its real meaning for many people here in the United States. Instead, for some people, it's become a day of excessive recklessness.

Here is some information I should have added to my original response to your question:

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States.

    I hope this helps.
