View entire thread: Cocoa/Espresso beans and acne???

Posted by Anonymous on 2004-11-18 12:26:10      Post Subject: Cocoa/Espresso beans and acne???

I am a fan of chocolate covered espresso beans and have them almost everyday (in a good quantity  ), but along with this I also have lots of water.......and the reason I dont feel guilty about being kinda addicted to those is my good intake of water to keep my system well functioning and prevent dehydration and thus constipation.

However, recently I visited the doctor and seeing the break-outs on my face he asked me to cut down on my chocolate/cocoa/"chocolate covered espresso beans" intake....

is anyone here to second his suggestion, coz as far as I know chocolate/coffee have nothing to do with acne...

please reply

thanks

I currently use fresh crushed espresso beans in my double chocolate espresso biscotti, but I hadn't thought of using whole beans until I just saw a post on chocolate covered espresso beans.

Any thoughts? Let me know. Thanks.

Hate to break it to you but that’s even hard to find in the US. Problem is nobody carries everything nor should they. Your best bet is to shop around for each item. Our pastries come from a local baker, biscotti from one distributor, and chocolate covered espresso beans from another. Try to break it down and then see what you can find. I've always found it easier to look on the packaging and call whom ever was distributing it in the first place. They can almost always get you in contact with a local distributor or need be they will setup an account for you.

Not sure where you coffee shop is, but if it is in the Southeast area, I would contact Stockton Graham & Co. We are a coffee roaster, with a large selection of allied products, equipment and barista supplies. It is really hard to find a roaster that carries everything esprecially food items. I have listed a few websites that offer chocolate covered espresso beans: www.kopperschocolate.com www.marich.com and for other supplies try www.espressosupply.com and for pastries, etc. I would check with local bakeries in the area.

I hope this helps and contact me personally if you are in the Southeast area.

View entire thread: Chocolate covered espresso beans -- how much caffeine?

Posted by Carmine Domenaco on 2008-01-02 23:56:59      Post Subject:

According to Bowes and Church's Food Values of Portions there are 5 mg. of caffeine in a chocolate covered espresso bean.

Espresso has about 100 mg per 1.5 oz serving using a double basket.

There is far more stimulation achieved from 30 chocolate covered espresso beans over 30 coffee beans extracted into espresso due to the presence of additional alkaloids in the chocolate.

Theobromine and theophylline (to a lesser degree) are present in chocolate, according to studies the body's reaction to the small amount of caffeine in chocolate are amplified by the other two alkaloids.

There are about 28 mg. of caffeine in 1.5 oz of chocolate and about 250 mg of theobromine.

When larger amounts of caffeine are joined with the two theo alkaloids the resulting effect is an overall greater stimulation.

All three alkaloids are quite similar in chemical composition:
Caffeine
1,3,7-trimethylxanthine
Theophylline
1,3-dimethylxanthine
Theobromine
3,7-dimethylxanthine

Science aside, I can drink two cups with breakfast, go and cup coffee all morning, drink two espressos and not get jittery. A handful of chocolate covered espresso beans makes me sweat and shake.

Does anyone have any idea how much caffeine is in chocolate covered espresso beans? I'd assume more than (liquid) coffee since one consumes the bean itself.

Thanks!
