As seen on Craigslist:

Ambex YM-10 Commercial Coffee Roaster - $9950 (Elko, Nevada)

Ambex YM-10 Commercial Coffee Roaster with roast profile software. 10 kilo drum roaster, red w/stainless steel. Less than 2 years old. Uses natural gas. Roasts up to 18 lbs. green coffee beans. Excellent condition. I'll sell stovepipe for $500 w/roaster. This is a great roaster for a small operation and would be ideal for a espresso house that wants to roast its own beans. Hate to part with it, but I need the cash. Roaster is pictured on Ruby Mountain Coffee Co. Web site, www.rubymountaincoffee.com. Call 775.777.3332 or 775.934.4095 for information.

A: Yes it will fit the standard Ron Popeil "Ronco" Rotisserie model. The platinum model is the same size as the Standard model. The other model he has is called the Compact model.

They are sold by actual weight, but remember that you lose 17% to 22% of the green weight or so during roasting. In other words a pound of green coffee beans will .85 lbs after it is roasted to a light roast and about .78 lbs or so very dark roasted. Does that make sense to you?

I really enjoy my Fresh Roast Plus 8. I roast all my coffee on the week-end for the whole week. I think it is very easy to use and works great. My wife made me take it outside because of the smoke and the smell, evidently she doesn't like the smell. I on the other hand love the smell. I have had mine a year and I only wait about 2-4 minutes between roasts and it doesn't seem to affected the roaster. I love it so much I bought another one so now I have 2 of them going at the same time. I even started my own website to sell green coffee beans and I also hav roasters for sale as well as roasted beans. Check it out.

Hello noradism,

From my experience, Organic and Fair Trade varieties should be under $2.00USD, except for decaf.

I have no experience with uncertified green beans. I'm guessing the price on general market arabica beans would be about half that.

<i>How can you tell if green coffee beans are fresh or have been stored in a warehouse for a year or more?</i>

Wow, no answers yet so I'll take a shot

1. Look at the color, should be, well, green. Past crop coffee starts to fade

2. Become familiar with the growing seasons of each country. If you get Central American coffee in a warehouse in US in Oct/Nov, its likely to be nearly a year old.

3. Ask the importer...get a copy of the bill of lading if you think he could be scamming you

4. Taste the coffee -- if it tastes good, who cares how long its been sitting there. If it tastes bad, ditto

Posted by trbb on 2008-08-02 08:05:52      Post Subject: Coffee Bean Roasting In-House

Hi,

At The Roasted Bean Boutiquewe offer a service where an existing coffee shop, cafe, Deli, Farm Shop etc can roast their own green beand in-house.

We supply a fully automatic programmable smokeless coffee bean roasting machine system which can be installed almost anywhere and can roast beans of batches of about 6lbs (2.5Kg) at a time.

The Coffee Bean Roasting machines whilst built for the novice are so versatile that on-the-fly changes can be made to the roasting profile (to within one degree of temperature, and to within one second in time) that Master Roasters would also be very satisfied with the control and final results.

Our offering brings coffee bean roasting in-house to an accessible level and allows coffee shops etc to roast their own green beans in front of their customers. Your customers can see, smell and tatse their beans being roasted - this is a very powerful differentiator from your competitors !!!!

Consider roasting green coffee beans in-house to move your business to the next level, draw more customer loyalty and offer a difference your competitors cannot give.

In-house coffee bean roasting is now an affordable reality for all businesses - no specialist skills needed - but full training and education on coffee roasting is given.

Hi, thank you for your welcome message.
My experience with coffee is 5 years in the growing and harvest proccess, roasting and packing and comercialization of coffee.
However, the family founders of the company have more than 18 years of experience in the coffee industry.

We own the farms in Honduras, where coffee is Shade-Grown. It is also a Single Origin coffee, which means it comes from the same land, guaranteeing the quality over time of the beans.

We started in Honduras in 1984, where we began exporting green coffee beans to Europe, as we still do today. In the mid-90's we introduced our packaged brands to the gourmet market in Honduras, having success locally and Unexpectadely internationally, when tourist (most of them from the USA) tried the coffee.

In 2002 we opened our roasting and packing plant in Houston as well as our website.

If any coffee lover would like a free samples please send us an e-mail to: sales@copantrade.com and we would be happy do send them promptly,

Thank you again

Way geeky book on coffee chemistry.
http://www.chipsbooks.com/cofflav.htm

Site for the institute on coffee research http://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/coffee/chemical.html

This is about as easy to digest as 5lbs of biscotti, but the last sentence helps explain why coffee smell does what it does to your brain.

-----

Green coffee beans contain up to 10% of chlorogenic acids, i.e., various isomers of hydroxy-cinnamoyl esters of quinic acid (a common plant constituent). Common to most plants and fruits, green coffee beans can contain as much as 10% of dry weight of chlorogenic acids. These are mixtures of mono- and di-esters of 3-substituted 4-hydroxycinnamic acid and quinic acid, a sugar-like molecule.

In the roasting process, approximately half of the chlorogenic acids lose a molecule of water, thereby forming an internal ester bond that results in a mixture of non-acidic quinolactones (quinides).

Brewing roasted coffee causes isomerisation of the quinides. This results in hundreds of different compounds, each with potentially unique pharmacological actions. Although few of these compounds are present in more than 0.3% of dry weight of coffee, each may contribute significantly to the effects of coffee as these compounds have chemical properties that allow ready entry into the brain. Furthermore, synergistic effects of different quinides acting on the same biological target may contribute to healthful coffee effects. The pharmacological effects of chlorogenic acids or quinides are mostly unknown. Of interest is a previous Australian report that 240 mg of ground coffee, approximately 1/5th of that contained in a 160 mL cup of coffee, displaced 50% of the binding of the opiate receptor antagonist naloxone. This suggests that this constituent of coffee may interact with the opiate system of the brain, which has been implicated in regulation of mood and well-being and in alcoholism and drug addiction.

Now there's a chance that this should be going in the coffee roasting board, but since my question is about coffee beans, this seems to be a bit more fitting.

Anywho, I'm going to be ordering about a pound of five different kind of green coffee beans. I'm mostly unfamiliar with different beans, where the best come from, etc. so I figured it would be better to ask the experts instead of just diving in randomly.

Here are the available beans:

Brazil Serra Negra
Sulawesi Torajaland
Colombian Excelso
Colombian Supremo
Costa Rica La Flora
Tanzanian Peaberry
Certified Organic Mexican Chiapas
Mexican Chiapas
Guatemala Antigua
Indian Mysore Plantation A
Papau New Guinea
Nicaragua La Bastilla

From what I've heard about and also tasted myself, though please correct me if I'm wrong, Costa Rica La Flora and Tanzanian Peaberry are very good. However I'm a little clueless on what the last three should be.

Any suggestions would be great. :)

For my daughter''s upcomming wedding reception, she wants to decorate the tables by sprinkling coffee beans around the candles & vases on the white tableclothes. Since the beans are not for consumption we were considering buying green coffee beans & roasting them ourselves to save on cost. Our question is this: Does anyone know if the oils from the coffee beans will stain the white table linen? We cant have that happening & I hate to invest the time & money into purchasing them, roasting them, and then finding out that they will leave a stain on the white linen''s. Any suggestions? Is this even a concern?

View entire thread: Do we have to use coffee machines??

Posted by Davec on 2008-03-10 16:29:03      Post Subject:

Well I suppose if we want to take it all back to basics.

1. Light fire from wood that's lying about
2. Grab some green coffee beans
3. Find suitable metal container
4. Place beans in container, put on fire and stir with another stick
5. Take roasted beans and pound with stone
6. Boil water in container on fire
7. Add pummeled (ground) coffee roasted earlier
8. Wait for a while
9. Enjoy...satisfied in the knowledge that you achieved all this without using any machines.

Whilst your doing all this, consider building a mud hut and pretending your somewhere in Ethiopia.

JD good luck on your new venture. I don't know about a no compete clause, but I was wondering about the green beans you are going to roast, grind and serve. Can you tell me something about them? Where you will get them, what types, all arabicas? Just curious. Thanks,
Joe :D

http://www.greenbeanery.ca/bean/catalog ... p?cPath=21 sells green coffee beans. I came across them in my research for fair trade suppliers.

not sure if they ship to the US, but they would probably be able to put you in contact with some in the States, if they don't.

cheers

View entire thread: Coffee Roasting Advice Needed

Posted by kpal24 on 2004-11-15 07:52:05      Post Subject: Coffee Roasting Advice Needed

I am a long time coffee lover and just recently decided to start roasting my own beans. After a little research, I bought a Hearthware I-Roast and a sampler pack of coffee beans plus a couple pounds of other green coffee beans. To date, I have not produced anything that tastes or smells remotely like coffee. The beans get the appropriate attractive color, and look as if they ought to be good but forget it. Unless I roast them really dark, approaching a light vienna, I get a little in the way of aroma and a dirty dish water taste. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks..

I own a plantation in Chiapas Mexico. Deep in the jungle the beans are shade grown at high altitude and 100% organic. It makes for the best coffee.

I will have about 13000lbs of green coffee beans to sell this year.

Posted by raven on 2004-01-01 22:14:16      Post Subject: price of coffee beans

I am selling, right now, green coffee beans as fresh as they come. The majority of coffee maniacs, like my wife, wants to roast her own. That is if she wants it roasted, which is in the oven. Roasted beans only last a couple of weeks before they start loosing their aroma and flavor. You may know better than me for the best cup of coffee is roasting it yourself.

Our beans are grown high in the mountains of Chiapas Mexico. Shade grown and 100% organic. They grow slow and are sun dried. Only the best for our customers. This plantation has never actually sold coffee to the United States before, so I am having to go through the painful process of getting everything certified and approved. No worries though. The beans will probably be around 6.00 a pound plus shipping. Not bad for the quality. I have done alot of research on other companies here and it is very competati ve with better quality.

If you roast your own green coffee beans the difference is in the flavour -however well coffee is packaged it always not as fresh as home roasted - the difficulty though is getting the blend correct! One you have done that no prepackaged coffe will be as good.

Posted by spindoc on 2005-10-12 01:04:31      Post Subject: REALLY fresh beans!

Something you may not know: green coffee beans can be purchased for about half the price of roasted beans, and they have a very long shelf life, approximating a year if stored reasonably. A roaster is not terribly expensive: I have an iRoast (made by Hearthware), and it is very easy to operate. If you roast at home, you get the best of both: the freshest of beans and the least price for your coffee!

There are lots of places on the Web to buy coffee beans and a roaster, too; but one of my very favorites just because of the care with which instructions are written and general completeness is www.sweetmarias.com

Great folks and reasonable prices.

I use 2 methods of roasting coffee, both are inexpensive. I like the way the Fresh Roast plus 8 roasts the coffee but it is in small batches usually enough for a pot of coffee. I used to do it inside with a window open and a fan on. My wife complained and occassionally set off the smoke detector so now I roast outside. The other method I use is a BBQ drum it will roast a pound at a time but you really don't get to see the coffee as it is roasting. What ever you chose I am positive your boy friend will enjoy roasting his own coffee. It is a lot of fun and great hobby. Have him check out my site for a great variety of green coffee beans.

Posted by Ericeman on 2008-05-29 00:36:10      Post Subject: Coffee Beginner

Here in northern New Jersey I find myself never really stretching farther than Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts for a good cup of coffee. I have no qualms with either establishments or their coffee but I am now looking to dive a bit deeper and perhaps develop a finer taste for the drink. The problem is, I have next to no experience in the field... I was hoping you guys could help. I have a few beginner level questions:

Are fresh roasted green coffee beans actually that much better and does roasting them in a whirly-pop popcorn pan actually work?

What is the best place to get a bag of coffee beans? Are there any websites to order from? Is there a place in New York I can head over to so I can purchase top quality coffee?

When faced with a load of various bean choices from different countries, which ones should I be looking for? I tend to prefer a sweeter coffee with a less burnt and nutty taste.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I''m really looking forward to exploring the finer side of coffee. Thanks!

Rose,

I think that as long as we're still on the topic of the original post, it's okay and things shouldn't get out of control. This topic is still about josip1978's website, www.hot-beverages.com

One of my pet peeves is the use of the word then where than should be used.
An excerpt taken from the hot beverages website:
"The northern people drinks more coffee then anyone". In this case, than should be used, versus then.

Some common examples to remember:

Than - Greater than; less than; better than; worse than.
Then - Until then; before then; and then; and then again.

A pound of green coffee beans does not weigh more than a pound of roasted coffee beans. :D

EspressoOutfitters has hit on something here. In the old days a business was built from bricks and mortar.....these days it is STILL built from bricks and mortar (albeit much more expensive brick!). The WWW is a tool, but the results you get from searching for a product such as "green coffee beans" can indeed be manipulated. I am no expert, but I believe that site owners can buy their way up the ranking on most search engines.
My opinion is the same as EO's... judge compnaies by reputation, service and the comments of their exosting clients.

I roast at home for myself and give some away to mostly family. I don't sell the roasted beans. I have 2 fresh roast plus 8 roasters plus a BBQ drum, I mostly roast outside. I have a website where I sell green coffee beans and not many customers. I do have a few at work and some friends buy off of my site also. I have been in business for 2 years and basically haven't turned a profit yet, that is what I mean about my ship has not come in. I have met many coffee farmers, distributors online and I am having a ball but at this point it is still a hobby.

They have a wide selection. They're fairly good on price. The quality is good. They even have roasting tips. The only coffee they're not selling at this time is the Sumatra Mandehling. I think its due to the tsunami that hit the region.
