i've seen a lot of good reviews for this machine. but i remember reading that in general, coffee makers don't produce good coffee if you make less than a full pot (8 cups for this one). is this true for this machine? my husband and i each drink just 1 cup a day.
what are our other options, other than french press?

Post Subject: Industry reports/information?
Hi,
I stumbled upon this forum through Google. I'm thinking of putting together a business plan for my own copy shop. Does anyone know where I might find some general coffee/coffee shop industry info like marketshare of companies (Starbucks, etc.), annual sales, stuff like that (with charts preferably)? Much thanks.

Post Subject: U.K. Coffee Shop Stats
Hello.
I know quite a bit about the US gourmet coffee industry, but I've recently moved to the UK and I was wondering if anyone has run into stats, i.e., average cusomer spend with and without pasteries, profit margins (probably similar to US), what would be considered a resonable rent for a decent high street location, general coffee industry stats, etc. Anything would be a help. I feel pretty foolish but I purchased a coffee shop business plan from a UK consultant and it's just a generic plan with random #s plugged in and no industry stats.

Try some fresh roasted beans from an online vendor. A vacuum brewed coffee may give you what your looking for too. In general coffee is higher quality now than years ago. If you are from the south chikory may have been added to your mothers coffee too.

Post Subject: First Post - looking at professional machines/grinders
Hello! I've been lurking here a few days, after finding the forums while searching out machine reviews.
I am helping a friend open and manage a shop in Baltimore, MD that will have a cafe as part of the set up. I worked for Borders for 7 years (cafe/cafe manager), but really know squat about equipment because the training was . . . not what it should be.
Now I'm looking at outfitting a cafe and I'm overwhelmed at the choices! I found the coffeegeek machine reviews, but I'm looking at buying equipment for a retail set up and I'm not finding what I want.
I've looked into local retailers, and I was wondering if anyone can give me their input about different brands. There are local vendors for La Cimbali, Rancilio, Nuova Simonelli, La San Marco and Faema. Any stong opinions on these machines? (I always used a Rancilio - it was used, abused and keep plugging along)
For our business, I'm thinking a three group semi or automatic, with steam wands, hot water dispenser, but not the kind that grind and tamp the shot for you - I prefer seperate grinders. I'm not trying to break the bank, but I have been given the go ahead to get good equipment - happily, my boss is invested in serving quality coffee.
Also, any grinder input? We'll need one for general coffee, then 2 for the espresso.
Thanks for your help! I knew this wasn't going to be easy, but every time I try to figure something out I find I need more information - now I'm going to hit the roasting posts for more info.
-Amy

Post Subject: Opening a drive-thru and exchanging advice
I could have sworn I posted to this message board before, but I cannot find my previous message.
We have been in the espresso coffee business off and on for 14 years. We've had two walk-in coffee shops in Oregon and Idaho. We've recently moved to Missouri and we have decided to open a drive-thru. We have our equipment and we know what we are doing as far as working with health department and running this sort of business.
What we DON'T know is how to set up a portable business. We will have power at the site...but we need to use tanks for water and gray water. We are building our own 8x10 building...which is a bit overwhelming. We just can't afford to spend the fortune many coffee kiosk/drive-thru manufacturers are asking. We would love to have someone to bounce questions off of. We've seen coffee consultants out there who offer advice, but it seems that we really don't need this service as these are geared to the beginning coffee shop owner.
At the same time...we are happy to help others who might have general coffee shop questions.

My only comment on the Starbucks thread.....the general coffee drinking public unfortunately get what they deserve in many cases. It's the same with food, cars... etc.. While people are willing to buy it and make no effort to inform themselves and change their buying habits....these chains selling coffee type drinks will continue to make big profits.
Put your average punter in the position of having to decide between their
20oz super skinny latte mocha crap coffee using some horrible badley roasted blensfor $2 and a
5 oz real latte with a bit of art on it for $2.50 using Yemen Mocha matari, or Ethiopian Harrar Longberry roasted less than a week ago etc.
They would choose the first bucket of slop, because it's just coffee isn't it?, don't all coffees taste the same. Oh and I get 20z for only 50c more.
Sad.....very sad, but it's the reason I don't buy coffee outside...unless I have to. If every body did the same, SB and chains like them would be either change, or go out of business.
P.S. I don't even MENTION, the mindless so called "Barista", who happily servers you a 6 second cremaless gusher, without a second thought!
