CoffeeForums.com is proud to announce the arrival of new promotional materials for our readers to use and request to help promote this site. Post Subject: Can I diner combine with a coffee shop?
To all you coffee shop owners. I have been looking for coffee shop space, no success, just empty shells that have nothing, not even a bathroom. I looked at a diner for sale today, and it could be neat. Asking about $29,999, does breakfast and simple lunch. Do you think I can incorporate a cozy diner theme into a coffee business as well? Continue their business but sell espresso & pastries(which they dont) I eventually want to make it all coffee shop, but I would be foolish to eliminate the $200 it makes per day. Please tell me your thoughts,,, Thanks.

Post Subject: How does my budget breakout look?
I'm really glad I found this forum. I thought I would ask for some input here.
I am spearheading an effort to open a coffee shop which will occupy a corner of our church expansion. About 20x30 or so, we will be able to seat around 40 to 50.
I am claiming roughly half of the total budget for equipment, which amounts to about $5000 that I have to spend. . I thought I would list my anticipated equipment and expenditures on each. I would welcome any input on where you folks feel I am under (or over) funding a particular piece of equipment. Also interested in any glaring ommisions regarding something that will be needed.
Commercial Espresso Machine 1 $949.00 Capresso C1300
Dedicated Espresso Grinder 1 $395.00 Rancilio Rocky Coffee Grinder
Coffee Roaster 1 $185.00 Iroast
Gram Scale 1 $42.00
I guess I am particularly interested in the first three items. My gut tells me I am not spending enough on the roaster. I am having some difficulty finding a roaster that would have a little bigger capacity and a more "commercial" build quality. Again, I have no experience with roasting yet, and I don't mean to sell the I roast short. That's why I'm counting on some input from the field.
Note that there are other items and equipment that I also have to cover with the 5K; I left out the freezer, refrigeration, microwave, and some sound equipment. The mission statement encompasses a broader range of beverages than just coffee, but I am determined to make coffee the hands-down focal point.
I am anticipating that hopefully, our equipment and some practice will far exceed the expectations of our patrons quality wise, and that we won't be taxed to serve a huge number of people, at least at first. My hope, of course, is to have this change as word gets out. Ultimately we see this as somewhat of a community fellowship type venue.
Some of you I'm sure are from areas that have a fair amount of culture, and the expectations are undoubtedly higher than they are here. There is nothing even resembling a coffee shop within 30 miles of our location. Culture here is, uh, lacking. Nevertheless, my aim is to pretend like there is a first class coffee shop across the street, and then compete with them.
PS, How do I store green coffee bean, and for how long does it keep?
Sorry for the huge (and somewhat unorganized) post, but I am really needing some guidance and input on this matter of what equipment to purchase.
Thanks list
EJL

Post Subject: My ideas and your thoughts
I am a 12 year teacher, ready to switch careers. I have wanted to have a coffee shop for quite a while. This year I have had it with all of the "extra" things we are having to do, that has nothing to do with teaching. So now, I am really eager to start my own business. So I am starting to put my plan together.
We live in a suburb that is growing by leaps and bounds. It was a rural community until the past ten years. Now it is a very good size community, but largely residential. However, the main street going from our town, into the city is starting to have commercial development. A hospital has just started being constructed and there is a lot of talk about the area being a commercial area for our community.
I feel this would be a good FUTURE location because there is already a lot of traffic on this street, even though there is no commercial development started yet.
Our idea for a business is a Gift shop with a coffee shop in the back and a drive through window. I know our community had a gift shop like what we are thinking of, but they closed down a couple of years ago for health reasons. The community supported them greatly. But, we are not sure if we should start out with the coffee shop and add the gifts later on, or else do it all at one time.
Also, financing is a concern for me. We have very good credit. But for the 11 years prior to last year, we taught/lived in a lower income community. We never made lots of money, but have just started this year getting good pay. As a result, we have not been able to save money like we want to. Some people have told me, "I have known people who can get an SBA even though they are flat broke". But I also read it is difficult to get a SBA loan.
Like I said, I am in the early planning stages. If I could have my wish, I would be opening up in June right when school gets out. Realistically, I doubt that will happen. But anyway, I wanted to see how flawed all of my thinking is. I put it out here for you all to read, chew up and spit back at me. Just be nice about it OK?
Thanks for your help in advance. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Hi, I am a student in college, just starting out. I intend on opening my own coffee shop when i graduate. I have been planning on this for a while, coffee has always been a passion of mine, I love making coffee for people and adding spices or what have you to it...so as to make it more interesting, but I have not a clue as to wholesale buying or where exactly to get machines to acomidate a shop..or how much coffee to actually buy in the very beginning.
I have 3 more years of college in which i will be taking management classes and others like that so i have plenty of time to do my homework on all of this but input from successful coffee shop owners like some of you are would be very helpful.
I apreciate your time.
thank you.

Post Subject: Selling a Coffee Shop in Portland, Oregon
We have a family owned coffee shop in Portland, Oregon that we would like to sell. We also own another business that is getting really swamped right now and we just don't have the time to dedicate to the coffee shop.
We have been open for about a year and a half and are building up a nice customer base that is continuing to grow. We love it dearly and hate to see it go, but we need to focus on our primary business.
We would like to get 75K which would include all inventory, equipment, and if any training is necessary we would be glad to do that as well. We are leasing the space we are in so it would be for the business only not any real estate. We are willing to carry a private contract on the purchase. If you would like me to email pics of the shop let me know.

Hi,
I am new to this forum and have been loving it. I just recently became seriously motivated to open my own coffee shop which I have been wanting to do for years!! I frequent coffee shops in my own state and seek them out whenever I am out of state. I have also worked for a friend that used to own a national franchise so I do have some experience with coffee shop drinks and equipment. Anyway, while researching opening a shop, I thought about looking into buying an existing one. Does anyone have advice on that? I also came across some consulting firms - Bellisimo, JavaBiz and Cafemakers. I saw a post about Bellisimo from someone, but is anyone familiar with the others? Any opinions of these companies? My last question, sorry for the long post, is, has anyone been to the American barista and coffee school? any good/worth it/legit?
Thanks for any of your replies and suggestions

Post Subject: Own a coffee shop/business in Chicago? Free promo
Hi Coffee Forums,
My name is Phil, co-creator of Indylist.org. The site's purpose is to open local community's eyes (Chicago only right now) to businesses that are owned and operated by local members of the community.
The reason I post here is because the other creators and myself are coffee fanatics and we hope to keep local coffee businesses going by promoting them in a non-corporate competitive environment. This means that Bob's Coffee Shop next door to my house will come up on search results before results for Starbucks show up.
If you own coffee shop in Chicago (or even know of one you like) check out the site where you can:
-Add your name to the directory
-Add photos
-Add hours of operation
-Interact with the local community
If you do not live in Chicago, please tell me where you operate and if you think this project would be well suited for your area. Also, any suggestions for improvement are 100% welcomed!
Thanks!

Post Subject: commercial space available in nyc
Hello. I have commercial space available on the ground floor of a recently renovated townhouse in nyc. The building is beautiful and it is conveniently located across the street from the subway. The building is perfect for a coffee shop, with exposed brick walls, a cozy comfortable feelng, and last but not least it's in a high traffic area. The location is in the Carnegie Hill section of nyc just north of E. 96th st at Lexington and E103rd St. The #4 Subway station is conveniently located at E103rd and Lex. There are many fashionable enterprises in this area, but a wonderful coffee cafe is sorely missing. Mt. Sinai Hospital, a world class medical facility, is a scant 3 blocks away. This entire area is undergoing dynamic growth both with respect to residential and commercial real estate sales and enterprises.
Additionally, a 1400sq ft 2bdrm apt is also available in the building, just over the coffee shop, in the event you'd also like to shorten your commute.
Please contact for more particulars.
Sincerely,

Post Subject: Coffee Roasting - New Business - Sales Agents or Food Broker
I am starting a wholesale coffee roasting business and while I do have experience in the coffee part of it, the sales is another question for me. I am in Canada and wonder if anyone with experience can tell me ...is it better to hire a Food Broker right away or should we hire an independant sales agent. If we do hire a sales agent to go to the major stores for us and the individual coffee shops, how does the commission work? Do we pay commission on the initial sign up and sale or should we pay commission on each order that that coffee shop makes (let's say that coffee shop orders 20 bags a week, do we pay commission to the sales person that started the contract on each order or just on the initial set up?) I would really like to clarify this...I am thinking that to sell to Safeway and Save-on-Foods, etc., a Food Broker would be best but not sure how their commission works either.
Any comment and/or advice is much appreciated and thank you.

If an owner of a coffee shop wanted to sell it, what would be the best way?
I'm not sure if we do, but so many times lately it seems to be the answer to several problems, none really related to the business. it is doing well.
I don't think it would be smart to have the fact that it is for sale be known.
the property and business would both be for sale, but not as a "package" per say. we would probably have to determine a fair price for them separately. and the roasting portion could possibly be a third part, or could be combined with the business.
the location is in a location where lots of artsy/high end development is going on. perhaps we should sell the business and keep the property.
are commercial business brokers the way to go? what about appraisals for business so out of the norm as a coffee shop? do they have their own set of rules?
I am torn. there are a lot of personal feelings at play here, and it is hard.

Post Subject: UK Business students need help
Hi
I work for a company that trains business students in London. The students have to sit a case study that this time is based on a fictional coffee shop chain. The US coffee shops industry is way in front of the UK so I'm interested in getting any ideas that you have about the case study. I'm sure that you are busy people so thanks for any help in advance.
In brief the coffee shop chain now has 18 stores in London after starting up 5 years ago. It is successful, generating £14m of revenue, split evenly between food and drink. It has plans to grow to 75 stores in 5 years time, with some of these started up in Europe. It has gone upmarket in its approach and is particularly targeting the 20 to 35 year old age group. It has just got funding from a venture capitalist and so everything appears rosy.
I'm interested in your views:
what are the risks involved? what is most likely to go wrong?
do you know any similar US chains?
is growth by acquisition, franchising or internal growth better?
I know that the market is different in some ways and wouldn't expect you to be an expert in any way. However all insights gratefully received.

Post Subject: Research on Opening a Coffee Shop
Hi! I am new to this site... but I have been reading some of the posts and am very impressed with the knowledge/experience/passion some of you have. I am opening a coffee shop, and would like to know what else I need to research before spending money on securing a lease, coffee-shop consultant, equipment, inventory, etc.
I have been doing A LOT of research. So far I have bought several books on the history of coffee and tea (also planning to serve tea) and other business-related books. I have observed the pedestrian (and vehicle) traffic in the areas/locations I am looking at. I have also done some research on the demographic profiles of the areas. I also understand the importance of a skilled barista. A great looking shop with not-so-great coffee is pretty worthless.
Any help with any of the following would be GREATLY appreciated!
Cheers,
~aliya
*Where is the best place to get equipment?
*Is it easier/better/cost-effective to roast your own coffee? Or to buy the beans from elsewhere?
*Anyone know a good tea supplier with a good variety?
*Should I just focus on coffee/pastries? Are other foods profitable?
*Is it worth it to hire a baker? Employ a local bakery?
*How many cups (downtown area of large city) a day would I expect to sell?
*How important is the name of the shop?
I could go on forever! Sorry for all the questions... any info would be helpful.

"The Fresh Roast System is the sous-chef in our kitchen," says Texas Roast owner Jeff Schneider. Schneider founded the Rockwall, TX coffee shop and roasting business less than one year ago after returning from military duty in Iraq, with no prior coffee roasting experience or formal training.
By obtaining such a high rating on Coffee Review's 100-point scale for their Cowboy Coffee blend, Texas Roast enters an elite class of specialty coffee craftsmen. Mr. Davids describes the blend as having a "very impressive aroma" and "grapefruit notes with distinct cedar and semi-sweet chocolate."
"Ever since the review, online sales of our coffee have been booming," says Schneider.
"This achievement is going to raise some eyebrows in our industry," notes specialty coffee industry consultant Andrew Hetzel. "Some traditionalists will always be skeptical of new technologies, but I believe that this proves automation can be an effective tool that will allow any business to roast craftsman-quality coffee with minimal requirements."
Mr. Schneider is planning additional Texas Roast locations in coming months, each of which will be outfitted with its own automated roaster.

Post Subject: Customers
I plan to open my shop up in a college town, if I can find a great location I would love to put it right next to the school. I wanted to go largely after the students, like staying open later around midterms and finals week. So that they'd have a nice quiet place to study. This isn't the only customers I would like to attract, and this is UMR. They're not a big party school or anything, its more of a serious school. You have your goof offs... I know from personal experience, I attended that school, but for the most part its pretty serious mature students. I know there wasn't a whole lot of options for me when I wanted to go somewhere to study and would have loved if a coffee shop had been there and allowed me to come in and sit.
Well, some people just opened up a new coffee shop in town and I went by because I wanted to see how they were doing and to get a cup of coffee. Well, I didn't even stop by because when I was driving up there was a bunch of not so nice looking students sitting on their steps. The building looked alright, I would have never put my shop there, but with the kids sitting there, (I'm 22, still a kid.. hahaha, but I also have two kids and a step of my own and married, little bit of a difference between the maturity level, I'd hope.), I really didn't want to go in, to go past those kids. They didn't really look like college students but I don't know.
My question is this.. sorry I'm long winded, but am I wrong to want to market the students? Is what I experienced with this other shop going to be what people are going to experience with mine? Or can I do something like put tables outside if they want to mingle or just ask them to leave?
I'm so torn about what I want to do now.

We're building a new 2 window drive-up coffee shop. We have pretty much settled on 10' wide x 25' long, but we have some flexibility on size and would appreciate input on this. Also, I've been told that the espresso machine should be no more than 1 step away from the employee at each window, and this is why we altered our original plans from 12' wide to 10'.
Are there any layout plans on this site?
Lastly, since our restroom will be for employees only, does it need to be ADA compliant?

The site I have chosen will not be ready for ~another 2 years.
I was thinking of setting up a roaster at home (I live in the country) and doing a business out of my house & on line. I’d start with a small roaster (3kg batches).
I’d love to get some feed back on this idea... positives or negatives!
I am presently out of work & its kind of seems now or never.

I'm opening up a new coffee shop and working with an architect on the buildout. I need to get an idea of the size water heater I need from other shops similiar to mine. My shop is 2000 sq. ft., seating for about 50-60 max. I'm only serving coffee, smoothies and pastries, no cooking. I'll only have cups, saucers, and eating utensils to wash in an undercounter dishwasher and/or 3-compartment sink. The landlord currently has a 10-gallon water heater but I know that's not going to be large enough. Anyone have any suggestions?

I totally understand about competition. The Bay Area has a coffee shop on every corner and the pricing is pretty cut-throat. I've managed to find a comfy little military base to work out of. I kick back 10%... but not as much competition.
Yeah, that is a problem.... Big Train has to be the best stuff out there. I use their Vanilla Chai.
With the parameters you've outlined.... I'm not sure you have much choice. Except to find a cheaper supplier, possibly order bulk over the internet or something? Maybe call the company directly?
good luck.

My only reason for selling is that our location is primarily to-go and we have gotten to the point that we need a superautomatic to keep up with our morning rush.
I purchased this machine for $5600 and am selling for $4900. This would be an awesome machine for a new coffee shop - it is easy to use and easy to program.

We'll have bakery items and a loungy comfortable sit down and relax environment. We've seen some off-the shelf coffee shop business plans, but have one already.
Any assistance or advice would be appreciated and helpful.

Post Subject: Building Out a Counter When Opening a Coffee Shop
This seems like it should be obvious, but I''ve looked on Craig''s List with no success.
For those of you who''ve opened coffee shops, is there a good way to find people/companies who can build a cool coffee shop counter? I''ve got very limited resources, so it doesn''t have to be really fancy. If they did a standard wood counter with cabinets/storage, I could even sponge paint it or something. But how do entrepeneurs get these things built cheaply and how much should I budget to get it built?
Thank you very much for any advice.

Post Subject: Looking for some advice on location of first shop
I live in Edinburgh and so the obvious location to site my first shop would be the place I know best Edinburgh, the first thing I have found out is that per head of population Edinburgh has the most coffee shops in Europe and that includes London, should I look further a field, there certainly does seem to be a shop on every corner.
I have been in the Hotel trade in the past running my hotel but this is certainly different and need to know what things I should look for when choosing the coffee shop location.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Post Subject: Coffee Art - The Perfect Wall Decor
If you own or manage a coffee shop I'm sure you've spent countless hours trying to figure out how to decorate the walls. I have a friend in Tulsa, OK who has created the perfect wall covering for coffee shops. She is an amazing artist who has discovered the art of painting with coffee.

All of Karen Eland's paintings are created entirely using espresso on watercolor. No additives or preservatives. You should check out her website to see samples like Mona Latte, Picasso's Blend, & The Whistler's Mocha.
They are very beautiful & very creative paintings!

I have been using GAT expresso-machines since after graduating high-school and I am a "fan" of the "expresso-bar" and "coffee-shop" as well.
I had the opportunity to enjoy coffee on both coasts of The United States Of America and on both coasts of Canada and in between both countries as well.
I hit the jack-pot marrying my wife who is from Budapest (Hungary) European Union.
GAT replacement-parts right in the shopping-mall on their own sales-rack.
I enjoyed coffee and desserts in Hungary and in Austria as well.
I also worked as a Barista in downtown Vancouver (British Columbia) Canada shortly before marrying my wife.

Post Subject: Bunnomatic dual grinder burr or blade?
This is my first post! Yeah! I am in the beginning stages of pouring over mind-boggling information regarding opening a coffee shop. From the looks of it, a lot of you are too! I am looking at a Bunnomatic dual commercial grinder. . . used. The owner states is has "blades." Through my research, I've only been able to find this G92 has burrs. Does anyone know if at one time it had blades? It doesn't appear to be old. I do know that I want to stick with a burr grinder and would hate to waste the money on a blade grinder for commercial purposes. Any info would be immensely helpful!!

Post Subject: Danesi Espresso Coffee - Opinions?
I tried some Danesi coffee from a local coffee shop and liked it but I am interested in opinions of it. The type that I tried was the decaf that I needed to buy for guests but I am interested in the Doppio Danesi or the Gold as well.
How do this brand of espresso coffee stack up against the other brands out there (i.e. Illy, etc.)?
Also, where should I purchase it? I checked out Roma Espresso but I wanted to know about other vendors out there since I have never dealt with Roma. I have purchased from Whole Latte Love but they don't sell the Danesi brand.
Thanks for your help.

Hello, I am a real estate agent. While i love the coffee shop scene, as i have researched it, I am far from the level which many of you all are. I''''ve been trying to followup and research the topic as much as possible since I have a coffeshop listing (both the business and real estate included). Are there any places that you would recommend me presenting my listing, from a buyers perspective? I am a think outside the box type person that tries to use fresh approaches and do my marketing in unique ways when compared to other \\\"old school\\\" agents...hence my usage of internet forums, etc. anyhow, any advice from you experts would be great.

Coffee Shop business for sale.
Lake Conroe, Texas, just north of Houston. Great location, outstanding potential, affluent area close to I-45.
This shop was my dream, being the coffee lover I am! Unfortunately, I must relocate in January. I have certainly considered hiring a manager, but the shop has great standing in the community and as you owners well know, the barista is a major key in the sucess of this business! I am afraid an out of town owner is not the answer for me, so have decided to sell.
Shop is appr. 1200 sq ft, a drive thru window and is located in a strip center. Been in business since July 06, self sustaning and still growing.
If interested, let me know! Will train

Post Subject: POS System for Coffee Carts
Hi All!
I am in the planning stages of opening a coffee cart and I was wondering which POS system is the best?
I know price is a big factor. I am looking at the Mocha Package from Coffee Shop Manager which includes everything needed and more for about $6,000. It looks well thought out and would have plenty of room for growth. Also includes features that will make operations smoother it appears. But is it really what I need and is there another that is better or cheaper that is more than adequate? It has everything needed in a very small footprint with seemingly great service which are both important to my business of a cart operation.
Pls advise! Thanks for all the help!

Post Subject: newbie/new shop!!
Hi - I am new here and am looking forward to sharing info on our love of coffee - I am opening my coffee shop/cafe on 8/12 - everything is set and need to decide on who my supplier will be. I attended Coffeefest LV a few weeks ago and am receiving all kinds of samples - yeah - some good, some not so :( Has anyone ever heard of Thomas Hammer Coffee Roasters?? I have tried several blends from them and they are great! However, minimum purchase required (which seems to be the norm) This is a small community and until I get established I am not willing to make this kind of committment - there is a local roaster up north from here called Javamania- good taste- (no minimum) any help would be appreciated. looking forward to sharing thoughts with everyone.

Post Subject: $80 Commercial Wifi Hotspot from Wifitastic.com
Hi Folks,
We've just released a new way of managng a wifi hotspot that is aimed at independant coffee shop owners (amongst others!)
Key points are
$79.95 gets you a commercial-quality wifi hotspot!
You set the rates.
Customers pay by credit card.
We make it Granny-Simple!
You get 60% of the revenue
Essentially, you buy our hotspot, plug it into your existing internet connection, fill in one web form to set up your details (how much you want to charge, etc) and we then handle it from there. There is no need for you to manage passwords, monitoring or anything like that.
During the beta ohase, we're doing a deal where we'll refund the $80 dollars that it cost to buy the hotspot after you run $250 worth of business through it (that's in addition to your 60% comission)
What do you think?
