In very general terms, most farmers have no way of getting their crop (green beans) to the big consuming markets- the US, Europe, Middle East and Australasia. So Coffee Brokers or sometimes bigger (or small but inventive) roasters buy the green (read: unroasted and unground) coffee from the farmers. The coffee is then shipped in sea containers to the buyer country.
Most roasters still buy their green coffee from large coffee brokers- such as Royal Coffee in New York. This saves the roaster the hard work of sourcing the coffee him/herself.
Generally in most countries Supermarkets do not roast their own coffee- although in the USA with the huge volume of coffee sales that go through some of the chains, I would not be suprised if there was some ownership link-up between some of the huge retailers and roasters.
You should try googl'ing "Coffee Brokers" and then you will get a list of the companies that import coffee.
Good luck with the project

Post Subject: Green Coffee Beans and Fair Trade Issues
Hello, I''ve started researching about home coffee bean roasting and the potential this has for allowing consumers to purchase beans directly from coffee farmers and pay them a truly sustainable wage.
Some articles I''ve read and information disclosed in the documentary \"Black Gold\" are uncovering the fact that many coffee farmers are not receiving the fair trade wage of around $1.51 touted by the Fair Trade organization. There are coffee brokers, co-op directors and other players in the supply chain that take a portion of the money making it difficult still for many farmers to earn a sustainable living.
What is your opinion on this issue? Have you heard similar accounts? Do you know of any green coffee bean companies who are sourcing directly from farmers and guarantee them a fair wage?

Will you be roasting the beans over there? If that's the case then shipping from the US is certainly an option although not the least expensive one. Certainly there must be reputable coffee brokers closer to China who bring bulk shipments of coffee in through those ports and would have far faster and cheaper shipping to China.
There are two coffee dealers in Indonesia who are working with quality beans and might be contacted - they're much closer to China and it might be a favorable arrangement for you.
First is Mr. Widya at Aroma Coffee in Bandung West Java Indonesia and the other is Alun Evans at http:www.mederkacoffee.com (sorry I have no contact info for Mr. Widya)
