Good find! It looks like I can hit 200F. Maybe its the cheap thermometers, or is there too much temperature loss after boil and transfer to press? How low is getting too low for using a press pot?

I just started using a press pot at home. I know to shoot for 195F - 200F. I have a meat thermometer and a deep fry thermometer. I got some water boiling and measured it to around 180-185F. That's the highest I can get it. Either both of my thermometers are off by about the same amount, or...
I'm a newbie to home roasting and would like to connect with someone using a stove top roaster. I've roasted about 20lbs with it so far and love it, but as I'm experimenting I'm getting myself confused and I think some of the questions may be specific to this type of roasting.
I haven't changed anything in my coffee making process. So it has to be the beans were not degassed enough. I've been making coffee using the same maker, grinder, filters, and quantites of water and beans for several years and I make 2-3 such batches each day.
How long does it take for the...
This is bizarre and I have to ask about it where folks would know best. I've recently started roasting my coffee at home. I had the Zach & Dani's and that thing kicked the bucket after less than 4lbs of coffee. So I switched to a stove top popcorn popper. I recently finished my 10lb sack of...
It occurred to me that you may not know that the temperature is fixed on the Zach & Dani's. Even though the total time setting is 26 minutes to get a good roast, I can't reduce the time and get a good roast because I have no control over the temperature. Plus this unit includes a 5 minute...
I found I like 26 minutes as well on my Zach & Dani's. I tried 27 and it was way too much. You feel I should go shorter than that? I'll give 25min a try tonight and see how I like it. Will post back after a cup.
As I look closer at the beans in different light sources I find that a lot of what I noticed is the bluish color, and not really brownish. From a distance it looks brownish, but closer it does have a definite bluish look to it that makes it look darker and browner. But.. in terms of what I...
That's what I suspected. It's an Indonesian Sumatra. I purchased it from www.morebeer.com. I am a homebrewer and home wine maker, they started doing coffee too so I picked it up. I'm definitely a coffee junky and love a great cup of Joe.
I have the Zach & Dani's roaster. I've read, after...
I'm a newbie to roasting since receiving a home roaster as a gift. The unroasted beans I received at the time were in some gas filled bag of sorts. I've read to store unroasted beans in a cool dry place in a breathable bag. I just ordered some unroasted beans from an online supplier. The...
I didn't think I was making expense the issue. Are special bags with one way valves the only approach for degassing? What other reasonable methods exist? I don't even understand the requirements to properly degass freshly roasted coffee.
What do you feel is the best approach for a home roaster to degas a fresh roast? What about storage after it has degassed?
I'm a newbie to home roasting and don't see myself running out to buy a bunch of bags with special valves in them. I've been using a Pyrex food container and setting the...
