Thanks rose. I actually tried it this morning! I let the hot coffee sit in the carafe for a few minutes. I was concerned about wasting water but I just used that water to fill the coffee maker. It does work! Coffee is warmer. It's been about 30 minutes and still warm. I'll see what it's like in an hour!

Slightly off topic, but in the colder months when my house is cooler, I preheat my press pot too. The carafe in any situation is like a heat sink, drawing heat out of the liquid; even a thermal carafe, if you think of it, has no energy of its own - it can hold the heat in better than a carafe w/o insulation, but it can't add any energy/heat. So unless you preheat it, it will lower the temp of what you're putting into it until it reaches an equilibrium, at which point it will hold in the heat better than a non-thermal carafe.
