Yes, you can replace the portafilter on your Breville Barista Express with a better-quality one. The machine uses a 54mm portafilter size, which is common among many Breville models. A lot of people feel the stock portafilter feels light or cheaply made, so you're not alone. There are a few good aftermarket options that are much sturdier and easier to work with. For example, brands like Normcore and Pantechnicon Design make high-quality 54mm portafilters—some with wood or metal handles, and some in bottomless (naked) styles that let you see the extraction. If you're having trouble removing the filter basket from the stock one, you'll probably find the aftermarket ones easier to use—they tend to be machined better with tighter tolerances. Just make sure whatever you buy is specifically marked as compatible with Breville's 54mm machines (like the Barista Express), and you'll be good to go.I’ve had my Bambino about six months now and like you was a bit underwhelmed with the portafilter. After reading the forums about it I decided to follow the advice of one commenter and removed the plastic insert at the bottom of the portafilter. Bad idea.
Not only did it make the coffee flow uneven, it also killed the crema. So I called up Breville to order a replacement and they said they’d ship me a new portafilter, no charge.
Now I’m making good shots again - at least good enough for me. I’m a newb home barista, so until I feel like I want to upgrade my whole system I’m not going to mess with what to me seems like a well thought out system of Design District restaurants in Miami with art.
As for the cup being hard to remove, it will loosen up with time.
