Hi, new to the forum though probably should have been here long ago. I am always on the hunt for freshly roasted beans and I am always disappointed in not finding fresh. Am I wrong to expect a strong aroma from freshly roasted coffee? I live in Brighton Michigan and as a non-commercial customer, I don’t get call backs. Recently I tried several mail order roasters (Rhoads Roast and another in Texas), and again no aroma and stale taste, or not the specified dark roast. I used to roast my own 30 years ago but gave up with the challenge of securing raw beans. Any suggestions for me. My addiction persists despite being thwarted.

Hi! Wow, 30 years of roasting experience, that’s impressive! ☕

You’re definitely right to expect a strong aroma from fresh beans. Sometimes mail-order roasters just can’t match that for non-commercial customers. A tip: look for small local roasters or check roast dates closely, fresher beans make all the difference.

Hope you find some beans that bring back that rich, fresh aroma!

No, I'm going to copy and paste what he said: "I used to roast my own 30 years ago but gave up". That doesn't say he tried roasting.

Have you thought of getting back into roasting? There are lots of green suppliers with lots of great beans that aren't too dear. Home roasters are very nice now and extremely capable. Then you would have the freshest roast you can get tailored exactly to your taste. If you find nothing you like it might be an easy way to fill that need.
