Get some books on color

Hi,

I lost my interior designer, she was really trying to take me for a ride. Come to think of it, ever since I started this, even my own family are trying screw me over. Ah...it's lonely at the top.

Anyways, enough about me, now let's talk about me.... :)

I went and got some books on color at Home Depot, and wow, what a learning experience. I've never been good at mixing colors, but now I have a pretty darn good color palette.

It's worth a try, think of it as saving $10,000!

Good luck!
Troyster :)

Hello,
I hired a retired artist and instructor who ownes his own studio. He is 80 years old, and has years and years of experience.

You could hire an art student or a painter at some pretty reasonable hourly rates. instructors at the local art high school might be looking for side jobs. I paid my guy $50 an hour. We met twice for two hours at a time. I am planning to use him for a couple more hours.

I recommend that you meet on site in your location. Meet on sunny and overcast days. Also check your colors next to flourescent and incandescant lights as well as whatever color neon you may be using. Some colors look terrible next to neon. Figure it out before you paint it on the walls. Bring every color swatch sample with you, that you have. If you are leaning toward a certain palatte, pick up samples in that range
from your paint store.

You may want your sing makers to know the colors your are choosing, and have your color consultant know what your sign makers are making. It should all work together.

FYI: NIKE hired an art student to design their now famous swoosh logo that is on all of their shoes and sportswear. She was paid $35.

Furniture Stores offer Design Services for Free

Those are good suggestions, GreenCat.

I wanted to add, that I went to get a couple of armless upholstered chairs at LaZboy, and they were very excited about the coffee bar. If you purchase something from them, and tell them what it's for, a designer should offer his/her services for free. You could get input on colors, and accessories, and she even helped me match the chair fabric to my color palette.

I think most furniture stores offer their design services for free, as a perk. It would be nice to have a designer bless your concept and give input!

Good luck!
Troyster :)

color help from the furniture store...

Cool!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't know you could get color help from the furniture places. what a great idea. I'll have to check a few out, and show them the colors. I've chosen, but not ordered my dining tables and chairs, but I've been toying with adding 2 or 3 comfy chairs in front of the windows.

I don't have much furniture shopping experience, but now I'm excited to go and have a look.

You'll feel really good when you know everything is pulled together correctly. I've had some very positive feedback on my "concept" and I hope your disigner blesses yours.

Sounds like you need an interior decorator rather than an interior designer. Interior designers cost more money because basically they are architects for the insides of buildings. They will figure out your layout and how to make things more accessible. They also do interior design too... However hiring a decorator for the colors will save you lot's of money. I'm a designer but right now I'm working on designing my coffee shop. Basically you'd want to pick a color that goes with everything you have or are able to get. Like my coffee shop has red walls, however I'm using formica laminate over the coffee bar area so I went and picked up a sample of the formica in the only red available and then had the wall color matched to the sample I had chosen. I have a wall of curtains which are dark grey so I made sure to have a complimentry color ceiling color. The ceiling color is a shade darker than the curtains as i wanted the curtains to withdrawl from my view, but I wanted the same color so as not to be a noticeable difference. Your shop can look like a million dollars but if you don't have good coffee you'll only get somewhat jaded customers. haha...

What we did was go to the local College of Education and ask if they wanted a project for their Interior design students.

We gave them 3 weeks and a brief. They came back to us with 12 presentations. Of the 12 there were 2 we liked and one of them was spot on. We offered that student some practicle experience and she jumped at the opertunity.

Total cost = $1 in phone calls

Need an Interior Designer?

i am actually an interior design student. the firm i am working at right now is doing a coffee chain design right now, and i came across this site while doing research.
i would be thrilled to specify materials for your shop. i have a ton of resources here, and would be willing to do it at an extremely resonable price, since i still have 1 more year of school.
if you are interested i could go into greater detail about my experience and education.

Hi I work with a construction company and we specialize in franchises. I am looking to freelance as a decorator/designer and have vast experience in a franchise development project. I would be happy to quote you a much lower price for what you are looking to do with your location. Please contact me at [email protected] or [email protected] if you are still looking for someone.

 I took a couple of semesters of interior design courses at one of my local collages. I would suggest to you that you might contact one of the interior design departments at one of the colleges in your area. Believe me, interior design teachers are always looking for projects for their students for FREE!! ID students are taught to "listen" to what their clients want. This is called the "programming" phase of ID. They will be graded on coming up to your expectations and ideas, and at the same time showing you many possibilities of interior design that you may not have thought of. Even before they do any type of ID for your place of business or home, they will make sure you agree on all color schemes, fabrics, paints, flooring, art, etc. Of course, they will be under the supervision of their teachers (believe me college ID teachers have extensive experience under their belts prior to their teaching careers). Hope this helps.

I think its time I bail on this forum, everyones to bitter, I have soon to be 4 cafes to run, to many wannabees.

Dude - What did you expect when you resurrected a dead thread with "send me email." Two points of etiquette: 1) focus on topics that are current and 2) post your suggestions to the thread, not solicit off-board communication. The idea is that this is a tool that is helpful when information is shared publicly.

Additionally, the bots are going to love your email address out there; you can expect a ton of spam soon.
