Been many years since I had any...it must not be too popular down here in the grocery stores. It's been around for years, though...

If you like it- that's all that matters! ;-)

I'm the type of person who always looks for the "treasure in the trash". I love coffee and will try anything once...be it fresh roasted from a coffee supplier to the canned stuff at the supermarket. In my neck of the woods, there are no local roasters. The closest I know of is in Tampa and I mail order it. It is remarkably better than the stuff at the supermarket, but it's also very expensive- so I try anything I can get my hands on locally, too.

I truly believe there's a difference between a coffee lover and a coffee connoisseur, but they do go hand in hand sometime...

I think these days they might be owned either by Kraft, Sarah Lee or General Foods. Originally out of San Francisco (back then the equivaent of Seattle today for coffee).... their competitors were other home grown brands...Hill Bros and Folgers.

They are (were) famous for one of the most outstanding advertising campaigns in history.... the "?" at a world title boxing bout back in Nevada in 1910. Before the bout Mannie, the owner, and his crew painted footsteps on the sidewalk leading to the ring, interspersed with "?"'s . The day the fight was on was unbearable hot- MJB gave out thousands of free pa fans with the "?" painted on them.... "why" and the MJB brand became famous! The "why?" slogan was to always be linked with the brand....

I live in the US but have little income.
Coffee Industry Secret No. 1 - Fresh roasted gourmet coffees only
cost about 25 cents per cup, if you grind and brew at home.
I skip my morning coffee at Dunkin Donuts and can now afford to replace
that with a whole pot of gourmet coffee at home and work. Sorry coffee
shops, but its true!

Also, skip the cream & sugar, you'll love real coffee without it.

I've never seen a can of MJB coffee, but my mother says she remembers it from a long time ago. Where is it still being sold?

Up until recently, I always thought MJB stood for any Mocha Java Blend, such as Trader Joe's Moka Java Blend.

Visiting this forum is always such a learning experience!

MJB Origins

According to Wikipedia:

MJB is a brand of coffee owned by Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA.
-- purchased in 2006.

They also own some other venerable coffee brands from the past, including Chase & Sanborn,
Chock full o'Nuts and Hills Bros.

MJB coffee was started in 1881. It is named for
Max J. Brandenstein, an importer of coffee, tea
and spices in San Francisco in the late 1800s.
Hence, MJB.

Zanetti seems to be re-introducing these brands in
retro/nostalgic fashion right now in NYC. Getting some traction
from what I hear. Interesting in a Specialty Coffee World
how a company is choosing to bring back coffees that are
"anti-specialty".

Suppose the public discovered that they can appreciate a
cup of merely good coffee. Now that's a scary thought!

I remember back in my youth, when Danny Thomas and daughter
Marlo Thomas were spokes people for Maxwell House Coffee, "Good
to the Last Drop".

I remember being a junior staff member at the National Boy
Scout Jamboree in Butler, Pennsylvania, 1973. As staff members,
we were tasked to be "security" for the VIP section of the 100,000
person "arena" shows at the opening and closing of the Jamboree.
It was a big deal for a 17 year old. Government officials and
dignitaries were in attendance. Some spoke. Ernie Banks was given
a special Boy Scout award, being one of the first outstanding
black baseball players in the Major Leagues.

And then, Danny Thomas came to the stage to deliver the
keynote address. All I remember is the chanting that wouldn't stop,
"We want Marlo, We want Marlo!". It just proves the effectiveness
of good advertising....

I buy MGB coffee when it's on sale---I always choose the brand on sale for my daily use coffee. Yes, it's good---not significantly different than Yuban or other coffees you would buy in a grocery store.
