I've had a Cuisinart grind and brew for ages. It's an older model with the blade grinder. I also have an Espresso machine and a separate burr grinder. The Cuisinart is showing signs of age, like the top of the grinder unit is starting to show cracks. It's always made a good cup of fresh coffee. I'm thinking of getting a machine with a burr grinder. I've seen that the newer Cuisinarts have burr grinders and I've also see the Breville machines with the grinder. I noticed the Breville machines recommend that you not use RO water because it may "damage" some parts. I'm used almost exclusively RO water in my Cuisinart and have not noticed any issues. Anyone out there know what they are talking about when the recommend not using RO water?

RO produces slightly acidic water which could damage coffee machine over time, but the pH level of RO water would take a very long time to do significant damage to the coffee maker. If you live in an area with hard water, chances are that damage caused by it will appear sooner rather than later. So, yes, RO water can damage your coffee makers regardless of the brand.

But using tap water could make the coffee taste nasty or a bit odd, so if you don't have any other source of water than buy bottled water to make your coffee with.

The Cuisinart brand has gone down in quality a lot over the last 10 years or so, I would stay away from that brand.

Breville still makes decent quality coffee machines, but you didn't say which one you were considering. If you are considering a drip maker than consider the Technovorm Moccamaster, these things will last a very long time and are raved about online for making great drip coffee.

Try not to get a machine with a built-in grinder, because if either the grinder or the coffee maker goes bad you have to throw the whole thing out, plus the added complication will result in a shorter life expectancy then separate units.
