Traffic formula

I am interested in setting up a coffee stand at a great intersection, but in a rural area. There are successful coffee shops in nearby towns, but no kiosk within 15 miles. In a 12-hour period (6 AM to 6 PM) on a typical weekday, about 3000 cars pass by.

We believe we can sell other products, that would work in our unique setting, besides typical coffee stand faire, but we probably would not pursue this if we could not count on a minimum of at least 120 coffee customers a day.

Does anyone know of an operable formula regarding the number of stops in relation to the number of passing cars--in any given location?

Thanks.

General Formula

It is hard to figure a specific formula for any type of speciality business without having to pay some firm an large amount. From my experience in the retail industry and business classes that I have taken recently, I would say your traffic would be somewhere around 3-5%. If your area would support this type of business, this formula would produce ninety to one-hundred and twenty customers a day. Once the storefront is established, this number will always rise since newcomers will be attracted to you a number of different ways. Variables to the formula include such occurances as which side of the road you are located on, customers like to make only right turns in the morning, and how visible to the road your location is.

Hi Jo:

3,000 cars per day is not a lot of traffic. Are there other locations where the traffic count is higher? Example if you found a spot that produced approximately 15-20,000 cars per day, then you can average about 1-3% of the traffic and on the a.m. side, i.e., heading to work in the morning, this will give you a more realistic idea of what you might expect, then multiply the cost of the average sale per customer. This will give you a better idea if you will make money or not. If you are seriously thinking of opening a drive thru visit our site and print out our free catalog. This is at least a starting point and contact us when you're ready to start.
