New to the forum, just want to say hello and look around for a while.

I own a few bicycle shops and I may have an opportunity to take over a restaurant (1200 sq ft) next to me. I was thinking of using a small portion to sell coffee/espresso, which seems to be somewhat of a growing niche among bike shops. So was looking for some ideas on this forum.Any ideas would be helpful, I know nothing at all about coffee and or coffee business, except that I enjoy it. I will keep searching the site and reading,

thank you

Hello "Pedalon"

Welcome!

It sounds like the idea of combining a coffee shop and a bike shop is becoming popular. We recently had someone join us who was thinking of doing the same thing. My concern is that you said you know nothing at all about coffee or running a coffee business. You're certainly going to need to hire someone who does!

Best wishes,
Rose

Rose,

thank you for the welcome, you are correct in that, but I myself are very hands on, so I like to know as much as I can as well. I do have a few people in mind though.

Hey Pedalon,

I think if you are hands on and love coffee, this is going to be fun business.
You can talk about bike and coffee. What are genius idea.. ;)

First you need to know is the initial investment.
Setting up typical espresso bar would cost around 15-20,000 dollars if you do it right.
Ofcourse you can also purchase used machine and save few dollars but inherit their headaches.

If you don't mind investing that much which I think most of the people be discouraged by now, ask specific questions.
Search the internet and see what you need to purchase and price them.

After the initial set up, you would need to hire a barista and serve good espresso. Search on youtube and see how they are supposed to make all the drinks as well.
You need to educated yourself.

Good Luck and let us know what you decide to do.

Pedalon,

It's great that you want to be "hands on." That means you'll learn what's necessary and be on top of things instead of depending on an employee to run the show.

You'll feel (and be) more in control, which is the way it should be.

Feel free to ask questions on this Forum. We have lots of experienced people who can help you.

Great idea!

I think you'll find that many bicycle people are crazy about coffee, and vice-versa.

Done right, there's no question in my mind that you can make $$$.

Where are you located? Do you have a website for your bike shop?

Thanks for your reply....I have been doing some research online, checking out what other bike shops are doing, trying to get a jist of what they do. I am not looking to make a fortune, there is a Staryuks and Dunkins about 2 miles away, I am trying to make this idea more of an extra add on for customers, and maybe make it a destination as some point. I suppose coffee and espresso is more than enough? trying to think of how many brands of coffee to carry? what equipment is needed...etc etc..then should I do pasteries, my brother is a baker so though of adding that maybe? but then it may turn into a different animal.

Thank you...I was thinking the same thing....Nothing like a jolt of coffee before or after a great ride!! We are located in southwest Florida

I can see someone drinking a shot of espresso before a bike ride, but if they drink anything more than that they'd have to worry about making a pit stop along the way.
