Help Please: Ratio and Measurements for a semi automatic espresso machine

So I am looking to upgrade from a nespresso to a semi automatic espresso machine and I want to know the ratio rule works and how to measure or "weight" the coffee to get the perfect amount of coffee. I am a total beginner with no experience with a semi automatic and any tips would be wonderful.
