Reducing temp for development stage

I have in the past charged my beans at a temp rate and then lowered temp and adjusting the air flow to slow the development stage. For example 400 charge reduce to 380 , However, a roaster mentioned to reduce to 320 for development and then raise to 380. While that seemed logical, I found the burners went off and it super prolonged the drying phase. The drop point for this roast is 418 and the gas out at 412. My thoughts is that I manage the drying with timer, air flow increa and then raise the temp after the development stage. what are you thoughts. I
