How do you roast on a sample roaster? I see them at the large cup pings, sometimes 5-8 in a row. do they just roast a pound or 2 to a particular temp or do they control the heat more like a large drum roaster? thx

They work more or less like a miniature version of a large drum roaster. Some of them don't have very sophisticated controls (i.e. you can control the gas only and not airflow).

Sample roasters are not much different from bigger drum roaster like Sam Said above.
They just roast smaller quantity so you can experiment with different roast when you get the new coffee beans you never roasted before or experiment on different type of roast so you don't have to waste large quantity of beans.

Ok, do people spend a lot of time varying the temp during the roast like a drum roaster or do they just bring to different final temps? I guess my question is, what is the process that a pro roaster goes through when they get a new bean? I have watched a few that pull beans as the temp rises but I read that varying the temp during the different stages also can be a variable. thanks
