How much clearance should you have above your roaster ?

It would be interesting to see how much clearance you "should" have, and how much clearance people actually do have above their roasters.
 
If you have enough clearance that you can load beans into the funnel/hopper, maybe a 1.5', you're good.
 
Depends on the size of the roaster and how your going to load it.
 
The clearance you need above your roaster is most important for your exhaust. You'd want to consult your roaster manufacturer for their recommendations on how to run the exhaust piping -- no tight bends to create back pressure or collect chaff and carcinogenic substances (sorry, couldn't resist) which should give you more than ample room to load your beans.

And when you run your exhaust outside don't be a dope like me and stooge around for a week before fitting a proper cap. The birds built a nest in my exhaust seemingly overnight and talk about screwing up your temperatures!
 
So Expat, I imagine you no longer sell "bird friendly" coffee. (could not resist either)
