what is the difference between the following models?

Dolce Gusto Melody 3 by Krups eg KP220840
Dolce Gusto Melody 3 by De'Longhi eg EDG420

both look the same
1.3L

just a different manufacturer and also slightly different head?

I've never used either one, but it looks like they are both coming out of the same factory. Just with different labels and a tweaked do-dad here and there.

Yup. I've never used either one of them as well, but I have read that even though Krups is a German company and DeLonghi is an Italian company *some* of their products are manufactured in China by Eugster/Frismag (based out of Switzerland) under those brands. Each respective company (Krups & DeLonghi) has their own design and engineering departments, but I think the designs of the ones you mentioned are very similar due to both of them using Nescafe Dolce Gusto pods with some kind of agreement with Nestle.

*some* = Krups also makes some of the same products in Germany
