What is the little gizmo in the Senseo water reservoir?

Hi,

There''s a little black thing in the reservoir. It looks a little like a micro-switch; but it''s not connected to anything.

I am NOT talking about the drain at the bottom of the reservoir.

What the heck is this thing?

Well I was curious enough to call Senseo.

The rep. said it was to prevent operation if the water level was too low.

But I still would like to know how it works. There is no connection between the little doodad and the machine; so how does it know?
