Wouldn't Tamping Crush Clumps?

Seems like the tamp pressure would crush the clumps that come out of my grinder. I have stirred them and I have not stirred them to break them up. Since the tamped grounds are a lot denser than the clumped or un-clumped grounds wouldn't they all be the same after tamping?

Just asking. . .

The reason most people break up any clumps is to ensure even ground density. Tamping clumps might lead to super dense pockets that the water might go around instead of going through. That could lead to uneven brew pressure and the grounds probably wouldn't get saturated through and through. Later!
