Hey folks,

I'm opening a pop-up coffee bar in an existing space which has ikea butchers block counters. I am worried that if coffee spills on it that it will stain. Has anybody run into this issue and/or does any body know of a seal that won't effect the look (aka make it shiny).

Thanks

Get a satin polyurethane. I think it's important to be sealed and able to be wiped with cleaner

I would assume the health inspectors will require the surface to be sealed... as suggested a satin poly (or talk to you local paint shop) should do the trick without being super glossy.

If the butcher block you are talking about is on the prep side of the coffee bar as opposed to the serving side, then you would want something safe for food contact such as one of the two I mentioned...of course, if the other is the case, it is not likely that the finish be food contact approved, but still check with your health department as Musicphan suggests. Rockler also offers more than a dozen satin urethane products.
