Coffee Seller Seeks RawBeans $0.50 a pound. Need the hook up.

ppb,

Starbucks is low quality, and even they pay above C market prices in most cases.

Beware of your ethics! Karma is a b!tch. :coffee1:

Here is some info on Starbucks green coffee sourcing for 2012:

"Purchasing third-party certified or verified coffees not only meets our customers’ expectations, but can also help protect the environment and the livelihood of farmers in coffee-growing regions. We have offered Fairtrade coffee since 2000, and are now one of the largest purchasers of Fairtrade certified coffee in the world. In 2012, 44.4 million pounds (8.1 %) of our coffee purchases were Fairtrade certified. We also purchased 8.7 million pounds (1.6%) of certified organic coffee in 2012.

In 2012, 93 % of our coffee was ethically sourced through C.A.F.E. Practices, Fairtrade and/or other externally verified or certified programs, with some coffees receiving multiple verifications or certifications. It is our goal that by 2015, 100 % of our coffee will be sourced this way.
Another important component of our approach is a green coffee pricing model that aims to pay the prices premium quality commands, while fostering price stability and mutually beneficial relationships with suppliers. Starbucks sourced 545 million pounds of premium quality green (unroasted) coffee from 29 countries in 2012, and paid an average price of $2.56 per pound. In 2012, 98% of our contracts included an economic transparency clause."

I would say that because of the volume they bought they paid "overall" average fair market prices.
I do not know if it all graded 80 for specialty, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt.

If John is referring to their over roasting of 95% of their coffees as being "low quality", then I would certainly agree. It seems there is quite a market for the smokey/burnt taste. Taste is subjective. I used to like dark roasted coffee. Not my cup today. Like to get the true characteristics and nuances of single origin
and blended coffees.

I would like to add that the quality control of Starbucks in reference to cleanliness, equipment, marketing, etc. in the East coast, by my personal experience and opinion is very good quality. JMO

JJJ,

There's a big difference between dark roasted and burnt. Starbucks tends toward the latter.
Fairtrade is not a note of quality. Neither are any of their certifications listed. Luckily, their avg pay is nearly $1 more than FT prices. There's is a mass market consumable and tastes as such.

Are they good people? Yes.

Is good coffee getting to their customers? No.

But the truth is, whatever any of us thinks about Starbucks, their over-roasted, old, often pre-ground coffee is still better than most, I repeat most, independents, and that is sad. Very sad.

Only about 1/4 of the Vietnam beans I bought from ebay were burnt. I think a machine may have heated up the berry to from the bean. Anyhow, I sorted and roasted some. I made a city and a full city roast. The caffeine rush was really good and the flavor was earthy. For a Robusta, it was better than deathwish coffee Robusta. I was surprised for an ebay bean, it wasn't bad. It was a Blue Cloud Coffee Vietnam bean Fair Trade. It just came with some junk mixed in that I had to spend an 1/2 hour or so sorting through.

What do you mean by "junk" ? Was it stuff like stones, wood chips, cigarette butts, screws, or pieces of glass?

I guess he wants the coffee farmer to not only have zero profit, but lose money and go out of business.

DING........ That comes out to 1US dollar a kilo = 42 PH Peso's per kilo,,, we would starve at that price...

We could not find coffee at $0.50 a pound today. The lowest current price is $0.84. But, it is interesting to note that you don't mind the quality. Hope, you won't mix it with high quality coffee to deceive the consumers.

sorry to hear about your misfortune. i take it they were already roasted. who was the seller on ebay? how is there reputation as a seller?

They eBay use is golforca. The Mexican agata robusta chiapias beans looked nice and green with no burnt or chips. Just when I roasted the bean, it just is nasty.

The Vietnamese robust a from eBay user bluecloudimport has black beans and shards. After sorting through the taste was chcolaty, earthy, with a hint of fruit. People say Vietnam is at the top of list for crappy beans. They tasted way better than the Mexican. I still want to try two more roasting profiles on the Mexican before my final decision on the bean. So far I did a slow roast with popcorn machine. double roast on the bean, which got rid of most of grassy taste. I did a slow roast using hot top, which gave it a flat taste. The two other profiles are faster.

If I get beans for $0.50 or $0.84 a pound. I don't intend to mix with good. It defeats the purpose of variety. Anyway I will just charge more for higher quality.

i'm buying my beans direct from the grower and paying more than twice as much as your .84 cents a lb. plus shipping. but i don't have any issues/complaints about the beans;-)

We will buy last year's crop of Mexican beans for $1.50/lb. to test the commercial roasters we build, then donate the roasted beans to the homeless shelter. "Selling" cheap beans is a bad idea.
