Hey everybody! New to forums but I figured this would be the best way to connect with other caffeine connoisseurs
If you are looking to roast just save money don't. You will pay about the same if not more than buying local. Unless you get in with a local roaster. I sell to a few friends at cost of what I pay. I just did a check on a coffee I pay around $1.90 a lb. An online green coffee retailer sells that coffee for over $6 a lb. I retail that coffee for $16 a lb. You have to remember that you have shrinkage in the roasting process. It is anywhere from 14 to 23 %. To get the coffee to me was an additional $8. Without time spent, cost of a roaster and fuel you are already over $15 a lb. Then there is the learning curve. I am not trying to talk you out of it..just letting you know you will not save money. You will gain satisfaction in knowing you created a wonderful cup of coffee by yourself.
