Identifying flavors

group thing is great. however, it will be difficult to do this specially in the beginning.
just buy few different, fresh roasted coffee from local roasters (let's say Ethiopian, Guatemalan, Indonesian. they all have very distinctive flavors), and research the generic flavors from internet. and cup them one by one.
certainly, you will taste the differences and try to pick out the most general smell/taste characteristics.

that would be a very good beginning.

Not to be nit-picky, but you may be off on the 10oz. of water... 5oz. is more of a standard per cupping sample.

yep, peter, you are absolutely correct.
I just got confused with water oz. for 10 grams of coffee, it should be 177 ml or 170 grams which is about 6oz of water.
