I was just curious and wanted to get some opinions and feedback about modified air poppers for coffee roasting.

I've noticed there are two main schools of thought here.

1) the first method involves using a relay to switch the heating coil on and off to control the heat. The relay is switched either by a PID or a micro controller running a PID control algorithm. The way most poppers are designed requires you to power the fan separately.

2) This 2nd method involves powering the fan separately and varying the fan speed to control the temp. More air means cooler temps which also has the added benefit of being able to roast more coffee at a time.

Have any of you tried either method? In your opinion which way is best?
