Hey everyone!
When I first got the Melodrip I was getting great results with a perfectly flat bed, but recently every time I brew with the Melodrip I'm getting a cratered bed and can't figure out why! When I do bare kettle brews my bed is flat.
My setup/method:
Pietro with pro-brew burrs - tried everything from medium fine to coarse, doesn't affect the cratering
V60 size 2
Fellow Stagg kettle
Zero water with lotus drops (mostly light & bright recipe)
Using standard MD recipe (15g, 16:1 ratio, 60g pours)
Bare kettle bloom stirred (or "probed" as Melodrip calls it) with included glass stick
The only thing I can think of that has changed from when I was getting a flat bed is the water - I was just using filtered water before. I can't imagine that would be the culprit, but who knows! I suspected channeling, hence trying different grind sizes, but probing the slurry doesn't show any sign of clumps in the slurry during the bloom. I hover the Melodrip as close to the coffee bed as possible and slowly move it around as per the instructions. Anyone else encounter this? I contacted Melodrip about the uneven coffee bed and was told it is "by design", so maybe I'm concerned about something I shouldn't be - but I was getting flat beds before and I would say those brews were more evenly extracted.
*Update* - I've attached photos of the coffee bed after my last brew. It may be hard to tell from the photo, but the middle crater goes about 1 cm deep. This was with regular filtered water, so the water must not be the culprit!
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!
