Coffee Combats Liver Disease

For those of you who don't know, is a "coffee science" site. Here is a little tidbit that I found interesting...

New research published in the Annals of Epidemiology, Volume 13, 2003, demonstrates that drinking three cups of coffee a day can reduce the risk of fatal liver disease by up to 40 percent... During 17 years of study of cardiovascular disease, the total number of deaths from all causes in the studied group was 4207. Fifty-three had the diagnosis of cirrhosis mentioned on the death certificate and of these 36 had alcoholic cirrhosis. The relative risk of liver cirrhosis as the major cause of death, when associated with an increase of two cups of coffee per day adjusted for sex, age, alcohol use and other major cardiovascular risk factors was 0.6 i.e. 40% less. For alcoholic cirrhosis the results were identical. But of course this no excuse to consume excessive amounts of alcohol and then ‘balance it out’ by drinking coffee.
