What is the best "redneck" way to roast coffee

Thanks for the props, Daniel. I still say for the money, and it's control in hitting whatever profile you'd like, the SC/TO is the best roaster out there.

I think I might try making the SC/TO roaster. Does it matter what brand of stir popcorn popper or turbo convection oven I use? I was thinking of getting the turbo convection oven on Ebay (since its not very common) and the stir popper at a thrift store.

I was also wondering what is a good temperature gauge for a homemade coffee roaster? as the element used for heating might not be accurate.

The way I first started roasting was using a cast iron skillet on the cooking range. I initially tried it on my gas grill but it took forever to roast. Next time I just tried it directly on the cooking range and it roasted pretty well. You have to keep stirring to make sure it gets a roasted evenly. You obviously wont get a perfectly even roast but its a good redneck way to get it done. If you have a heat thermometer you can play with temperature settings and see different results which turned out be quite interesting and a valuable lesson for me

Has anyone tried any of the freshroast coffee roasters? Are they any good? I ask because I want to buy a roaster and this article suggests the SR700 as it can be linked up to a computer? Bit geeky but I like the sound of that!
