Dregs - My machine, or grind?

Last night, I made two delicious 2 oz cups of espresso, using 3 oz of water for each, in my aluminum stovetop espresso maker. Only problem was a lip full of dregs at the very bottom.

Typically, is this a hardware or a grind problem? I asked the shopkeeper, a dedicated coffee only seller, for the espresso grind. Would the Turkish grind, which is finer than the espresso grind, solve my problem?
 
you need to go coarser...the dregs are from the coffee going through the filter...if you go finer you will get more "dregs" in your top portion of the stove top.
